Valeo Vision Systems
By Adam
I did my first work experience in Valeo Vision systems in Tuam. Valeo is an international company with its headquarters in Paris. The Tuam site is responsible for researching and developing cameras that can be used in self-driving cars. The international nature of the company is immediately evident, with over 35 different nationalities working there from everything between Tunisia to Costa Rica.
During my work experience, I was able to shadow a variety of different departments, including the IT and R&D departments. I learned about these careers, and the different qualifications you need to work in these areas.
My day began at 8 O'Clock, when I would report to the main IT office before being sent off to the different areas. My work was varied, and included jobs such as debugging code with the software developers, working with Excel spreadsheets, and updating the security access of personnel.
There were two breaks, one at 10 O'clock and another at 1. There was a canteen in the building, so I didn't need to bring a lunch.
My favourite experience during the week was going to the R&D department and learning about how they calibrate the cameras. It needed a large amount of precision, as even a slight scratch on the lens could result in an accident. The lab had different optical illusions and dioramas to test the performance of the cameras.
I went home at 5:30 each day. I loved working at Valeo, and am glad I got to learn more about IT, engineering, and science, so that I could make an informed choice about my Leaving Cert subjects.
