BT Young Scientist
By Adam
This year, I was involved in a team that made it to the finals of the 2019 BT Young Scientist Exhibition. It has been a long time since our school has been involved in the competition, so it was a nice surprise when we actually made it in.
Our project was titled "Have the changes made to the Junior Cycle science curriculum led to an increase in the ability of students to see flaws or mistakes in a scientific study?", and was in the Social and Behavioural category.
The project was done during November and December, and involved creating a survey, poster, and report. We compared how well 3rd years and Transition years could see problems in an experiment. We found that Transition years scored 4.5% higher than 3rd years, which was the opposite of what we expected.
The exhibition itself was four days, during which we were interviewed by judges and VIPs. We also talked with members of the public, and our project was very popular with both teachers and students alike. Each day began at 9 and ended around 5:30. The awards ceremony was on at 5:30 on the Friday and lasted until 7:30. Sadly, we didn't win any awards, but we got good feedback from the judges, and we all plan to enter next year.
Any students interested in entering next year should attend STEAM club. There's no time like the present to start brain-storming and researching different ideas for projects.
