My Musical Experience as Chorus Girl
By Katie
Presentation College Headford's musical for 2018 was Calamity Jane. Calamity Jane is a western based in Deadwood, South Dakota. After Henry Miller mistakenly promises that he would bring the lovely “actress Frances Fryer” to Deadwood to perform, unbeknownst to him Francis Fryer is actually a man, Calamity promises to bring back Adelaide Adams, the biggest star of the generation instead. She travels to Chicago and mistakenly brings back Katie Brown, Adelaide’s maid. Katie Brown ends up charming the town, including Lt. Danny Gilmartin, who Calamity was in love it. While she is grieving over Danny, she ends up discovering her true feelings for Wild Bill Hickok.
I was involved in the musical in many ways. I helped with painting the props and the large backdrop, I was part of the harmony group and I was a chorus girl.
I was involved in helping the set design. I was part of a long list that was in charge of painting the canvas for the backdrop. The backdrop was a large painting of the Black Hills. It took over two weeks to get the full canvas done, we had to miss every class to get the canvas done in time. I also helped painting some of the other props on the stage.
As a chorus girl, I had to learn all the chorus songs. I had to learn all the words for the songs and all the choreography. I was part of a group that had to take objects off Calamity that she had brought back from Chicago. I was also in the scene leading in to Keep It Under Your Hat with a few other chorus girls. We had to spend breaks practising the songs and learning all the words.
I was part of the lower Harmony group. In this group I had to learn all the lower harmonies for the chorus songs. I had to spend break times and also some class time to go and learn the harmonies.
Being part of this years musical was a great experience. I made many new friends and became closer to people I known previously but not very well. I don't think any of us will forget the memories we are taking away from the show.
